Some considerations on the production of slabs.
The marble blocks that are extracted in our quarries or that come from block deposits present here in the area of Massa Carrara, Italy, or area of Novelda, Alicante Spain, are taken to the sawmills where they are cut into slabs, usually 2 cm thick.
The thickness of 2 cm is the most common and is usually used to make cuts to measure, for coverings of floors and walls for example.
For the manufacture of tops for kitchens and bathrooms, stair treads, façade cladding of buildings, here in Europe and the United States, slabs of 3 cm thickness are generally used.
Some of the more expensive marble that we manufacture, such as the Carrara White marble extra quality, Arabescato marble, Statuary marble, Calacatta gold marble, because they are so expensive, are laminated in slabs of 2 cm thick or their equivalent in inches.
Only on request are cut in slabs of 3 cm or to execute a specific project where pieces of 3 cm thickness have been specified.
This to avoid having here in deposit slabs of 3 cm that have less use, less rotation of inventory, than the slabs of 2 cm that if they move faster.
In markets such as those in Latin America, South America, Mexico, Central America and some workshops in Florida USA, we usually use 2 cm marble slabs for the manufacture of floors and wall coverings and also for the manufacture of kitchen and bathroom tops.
There is very good workmanship specialized in making the edges of the tops in (2 + 2) cm. This is done well, that is to say, hiding to the maximum the union of the pieces of 2 cm that will only be seen in the front edge of the top, is a good solution that has the following advantages:
Save material, because the marble of 3 cm of thickness has a value of 40% more with respect to the marble of 2 cm of thickness. There is more availability of marbles in slabs of 2 cm in the deposits that marble in slabs of 3 cm (in those markets, the local distributors, only import the slabs of 3 cm on request).
To cut and work there is lower consumption of diamond tools, the only thing that must be done, is to make very well, cut a strip of for example 6 cm wide, which sticks below the front edge of the top and then it will be given shape and brightness as if it were an edge of 4 cm, is actually (2 + 2) cm.
This well done, is very advantageous, even because it eliminates weights in transport, handling and assembly on site. The final result, from the visual point of view, is an edge of a Top of 4 cm.
Of course, if I make the union of (2 + 2) cm with marbled granites or marbles, with movement, it will be easier to hide the union. However, if I have to make the union in a white marble Carrara with a little vein, it will be more difficult.
An old technique or trick of artisans is to apply the following:
"If you can not hide a defect or a fabrication, then make it more obvious."
In this case, if I can not disassemble the union of the two pieces that make up the edge, I make a bevel before joining the pieces, then instead of a "disguised union", I will see a good union with the shone bevel of 2.5 mm for example.
There are workshops however that prefer to work the slabs of 3 cm and avoid sticking and simulating the joints, etc. etc.
The two systems are valid but of course, the more luxurious the project, the architects usually use slabs of 2 cm only for floors and wall coverings, while for the Tops of kitchens and bathrooms they usually use 3 and 4 cm of thickness.
While for the steps of stairs 3 and 4 cm. For special works, even greater thicknesses and solid parts fabrication are used.
Of course, the decision is optional from the owner of the project and the architect-designer or designer.
We can supply as slabs of standard thickness 2 cm and on request 3 cm thick and more.
Our suggestion is to evaluate this decision based on all the variables of the project and if they need our assistance, we will be honored and happy to collaborate with you in the design and selection of the most suitable thicknesses of the marble before the election and/or manufacturing.
